According to a new study, walking 8,000 steps twice a week, rather than daily, can help prevent heart disease.
If you're concerned about your mortality risk because you can't walk 8,000 steps (if you're over 60) or 10,000 steps (if you're under 60) every day, it's time to breathe a sigh of relief. Because you can lower your goal while still staying in shape. A new study published in JAMA Network Open found that people aged 20 and up who took 8,000 or more steps just one or two days a week were 14.9% less likely to die than sedentary people. Dr. Kosuke Inoue of Kyoto University in Japan led the study, which also included UCLA researchers. Walking for one or two days is still associated with a significant reduction in cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, according to the study's authors, though each additional day of walking provides greater benefits. Certainly, our fitness goals seem more attainable now that most of us can devote time to our bodies over the weekend. Walking was also described as a simple, low-impact, and inexpensive form of exercise that is an easy "step" towards a less sedentary lifestyle, which is a growing cause of various diseases.
